Marbella is a city of narrow streets and white washed houses situated in the heart of the Costa del Sol. Its beauty is how it combines traditional Andalusian flavour, with the cosmopolitan city it has become.
Marbella is the place to be seen on the Costa del Sol. Film stars and millionaires visit this spot to enjoy its myriad of leisure possibilities; be it water sports, amazing beaches, infamous nightlife, or its numerous golf courses and three leisure ports.
It is not however just another soulless resort for the rich and famous, it is steeped in history and places of interest dating back to the Roman and Moorish occupation, such as Orange square and the ruins of the old Arab wall which still partially surrounds the Old Town.
Not only has Marbella a wonderful location, nestled between mountains and sea, its mild climate entices visitors all year round.
Marbella enjoys a pleasant warm climate due to its geographical position and fortunate location surrounded by mountains. Its average temperature is 18°C and has 320 days of sunshine a year. November/December are the months in which it rains the most (but even then it is very little).
The main beach in the centre of Marbella is Playa Puerto Banus, which is 1 km long and 50 m wide with fine golden sand. It has won the blue flag since in 1992 and has many facilities and services, including various water sports.
Playa de la Bajadilla and Playa de la Fontanilla are located near the old fishing port. They are very popular during the summer with locals and tourists alike, filled with parasols and sun loungers and people enjoying a cool drink in one of the numerous bars.
Playa de Linda Vista is a very pretty beach, one in which you can enjoy the clear waters while participating in one of the many water sports available or take a stroll and admire the ruins of Basilica Vega del Mar at the north end of the beach.
Although a bit further out of town, Playa de Calahonda, between Marbella and Mijas, is one of the most attractive beaches in the area. It is 1000 sq metres of white sand, with clear clean water and facilties such as showers, a bar and lifeguard service.
